R∞ - "000"

It seems like a lot of difficult-to-categorize music falls under the vaporwave banner these days. Unique electronic artist R∞ brings us 000, which is just the sort of music I was referring to. In this work, R∞ is giving us everything and nothing all at once. Tantalizing us with intricately detailed cover art, but using the most minimal, numeric track titles as possible, R∞ is loading the release with expectations, realities, and the mystery in between.

000 is a rhythmic journey through a lush, untamed world with hypnotic synth loops, ambient fills, and perhaps an occasional referential audio sample. All of these things blend together to create a cocktail of heady, psychotropic entertainment, both compelling and peaceful, like lucid dream. What’s it all about? I have no idea. I’m not sure I care. Each movement of the work brings a new interest, while maintaining focus with repeated sounds and motifs that punctuate the forward motion of the experience.

Churning with natural sounds, swirling lines of electronica, and overgrown with mystique, 000 delivers a satisfying ride through the tangled, shadowy jungles of imagination - full of enigmatic ancient ruins and untold dangers.

FRENCH 75 - "French 75"

French 75 - "French 75"

(Power Lunch Corporation)

Set your seat into the reclined position and order another martini. It's time to take a flight on the Power Lunch Corporate jet. Your destination?

The future.

No wait! Don't go! Not our actual future! A perfectly groovy future full of funky vibes and endless vacations. Prepare yourself to be transported to the sunny shores of French 75, a resort for your troubled soul. This is vaporwave of the highest order - with plenty of chopped and screwed vintage vibes waiting to caress your mind like warm tropical breezes.

As the jetliner lands on the runway, beats drop with impossible thump, samples converge in an intoxicating mixture of sun, sex, and sleaze. It's like being in a perpetual dream where a mop-headed, tweed wearing secret agent fires one-liners at every villain as he drives classic foreign sports cars and buys mixed beverages for freckled French beauties.

The successful team-up of Danger.ファルコン.1989 and METAPRISE APPLICATIONS brings us this exploitave escape. Rich samples lock in with overpowered beats in all the best ways as dense distortions wash each audio channel with countless layers of disintegration, making this one of my favorite vaporwave releases of the year so far.

VALET GIRLS - "Lost Wrld"

Valet Girls - "Lost Wrld" (DMT Tapes) I wasn't sure what to expect with this one. I imagined a lot of things. Big chunks of John Williams' score music vaporized and remixed in every way possible - but then I got a good listen of this, and I was blown away by how great this is. This is some major entertaining electronic tunes, augmented in just the right places with stray samples of dino noises and Ian Malcom quotes.    Lost Wrld kicks off with a track called Site B , that has a distinctly plunderphonic feel that is an excellent lead-in to the clever vocal sample work of Ingen Corporate Dossier and Embryonics Lab (Playing God) . Each successive track introduces new sounds and plot points. I'm really digging the creativity here, and, while on the surface, this release seems like it's going to be all about the Jurassic Park films, there are some other documentary style clips and sound effects that widen the scope. The closer of the album, Something Has Survived , is especially impressive. If you are a fan of vaporwave, and dinosaur movies, this is the release you didn't know you were waiting for. It's got all the cooky, sample-rich fun of a good vapor tape with enough originality and creative composition to really stand on its own. B E G O T T E N - "Hushwave"

B e g o t t e n - "Hushwave"

(Geometric Lullaby)

Smooth, dreamy vapes from waver, Begotten, will transport you to a place where dead pop stars sing forever in a foggy purgatory.

With an entertaining focus on dreadful spookiness, this release is like finding the perfect Halloween decoration on clearance long after the holiday has passed. My favorite track on here is "Hidden," which has a super fun suprise at the end.

Lots of gleaming, skating rink style jams here with just the perfect mix of vintage vapor velvet and skeleton fashions. All await you in this fine, upstanding creepshow known as Hushwave
