w i n t e r q u i l t 愛が止ま - “Haunted House Vol. 1: Texas Boneyard“
Liverpool artist w i n t e r q u i l t 愛が止ま releases an album filled with enough spooky vibes to fill up an entire haunted house, while still making listeners nod their heads to driving electronic beats. Haunted House Vol. 1: Texas Boneyard is a sample based project released on vaporwave adjacent label, Flamingo Vapor - but the interesting thing is, all of the samples come from the artist’s own work.
w i n t e r q u i l t 愛が止ま recorded the original material under the project name Uncleghost, back in 2003. Then, sixteen years later, he revisited his old material, adding electronic beats, effects, and clever editing - to create this unusually striking work. Built on heavy house beats, wisps of sampled melody, and ghostly flutters of misty reverb, Haunted House Vol. 1 is a pleasing blend of eerie vibes and pumping rhythms.
Highlight tracks include Texas Boneyard, which loops a forlorn guitar sample with voices of the dead and a healthy amount of thump, Slum, a detailed six-minute track that combines breathy voices with shimmering synths that echo into deepness before launching into a strong bass-line and swirling vocal accents, and Abattoir, a creeping horror of organs, buzzing electronica and general carnival mayhem.
Overall, Haunted House Vol. 1 projects a sinister mood while entertaining with musical variety of melody and arrangements. The unlikely and creative recycling of the forgotten material of youth into something this fresh and engaging deserves a listen.
